There was an excellent turnout at the 37th Taverners Victoria – Boxing Day Breakfast at the MCG this year. Our members and guests were treated to a special hour of Glenn McGrath recounting his cricketing development and his incredible focus to be the best bowler possible. We heard intimate memories around losing his great mates Shane Warne and Andrew Symonds as well as mentor Rodney Marsh, plus the inspiration and achievements drawn from the adversity faced by his first wife Jane, through the McGrath Foundation.
3 Year Partnership announced for All Abilities Cricketers
After a touching Welcome to Country from MC Ron Steiner, Chair Stuart Stockdale launched our new 3 Year Charity Partnership with Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association (MAACA) and introduced their President, Steve Lefebvre to the stage.
MAACA promote and run a 3-tiered competition for cricketers with an Intellectual Disability (ID) to compete against each other. In season 2022/23 there are 21 teams within 16 mainstream clubs across Melbourne and Central Victoria. Steve explained Taverners long involvement in Intellectual Disability cricket carnivals, MAACA’s formation in 2015 and future plans to support and expand it’s competitions. The majority of The Victorian Vikings who will represent our state at the NCICs play in the MAACA. This ground-breaking Association is a vital feeding program for our National and International ID cricketers.
A special mention was given to the boys from Ferntree Gully CC‘s All Abilities team, who were thrilled to be photographed with Australian cricket legend Glenn McGrath (below).
Taverners Rise to the occasion for a Stand up Auction
Following on from an engaging interview, 8 Glen McGrath autographed, Australian ODI Caps and a Stump, along with 3 autographed bats by Ashes Test and BBL Renegades players were auctioned off by Taverner, Warwick Burnham. Everyone in the room was upstanding. As the bids rose, the number of buyers decreased until the winning bidders were the last ones standing. Our successful bidders showed great generosity, raising valuable funds way above reserves.
The “King of Spin” smashed all expectations
The feature item offered was a handsomely framed King of Spin tribute to Shane Warne with a ball signed by the great man Warnie. Amazingly The King fetched a staggering $1,600 above reserve.
Champs “tons” up again with his greatest hits and cricket ditties
Seems the Taverners Boxing Day Breakfast is not complete without Tongue planted firmly in the Cheek of one Mr Greg Champion O.A.M. Endeavouring to milk the Demons Premiership afterglow, Champs kept the audience laughing with his sporting jibes and surprise twists, strumming away with guitar at hand.
A huge thank you goes out to all who attended and showed their generous support in purchasing Sporting Chance Raffle Tickets, Sponsoring a MAACA Player or buying a piece of cricket history/memorabilia at our two auctions.
Many thanks to Saktti Breen our Events and Partnerships Manager, and her supporting committee for a fabulous event.
