Rocket’s insights on the AFL
4 time Premiership Hawk and AFL coach Rodney Eade
Rodney “Rocket” Eade opened proceedings at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, and discussed his views on the pressures of modern day AFL coaching and the resignations of Clarkson and Hardwick.
Eade’s own career provided great insight into the role and the industry. Rodney was also glowing over the positives of establishing a Tasmanian AFL team to save the future of footy and improve the economy in his home state.
He elaborated on his sporting childhood where cricket was his first passion. His Father played State cricket for Tassie but while being very promising as a junior, it was his speed that pointed “Rocket’s” career towards professional football.
Our MC, Stuart Stockdale guided the audience through Eades glittering career at Hawthorn, with 4 Premierships and his intriguing coaching experiences at 4 AFL clubs.
Eade’s key message was you have to find your own style so the players believe you are genuine. Learn from new experiences and open doors to new opportunities.
The Road to England for our Aussies

Australian selector Tony Dodemaide with Chris Rogers
There is no denying the depth of experience held by “Bucks” and “Dodders” when it comes to First Class Cricket and English conditions. Rogers shared many anecdotes from his Test career including some humorous tribulations of opening with Dave Warner, Shane Watson, his colour blindness and dizzy spells against the Poms.
Chris also talked about the Victorian Team with a focus on developing our local talent rather than chasing interstate players to win trophies. He believes Victoria has an equal talent pool to NSW and he continues to strive to produce greater national team representation from within our home state.
Tony gave insight into the processes behind National team selection, the role of statistics and how it came up trumps for Travis Head in India, holding him back due to the manipulated pitches, prepared early on by the Indians. Tony is feeling very confident with the squad we are taking over to England and there is plenty of talented backup if needed, playing in the Counties.
Many more playing memories were shared by Dodders through the probing mind of MC, Stuart Stockdale, with plenty of laughter following.
